NEW YORK CITY (TIP): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a packed schedule during his 6 day US visit, which includes his address to a high-level UN body, according to officials who briefed the news media here  23rd night.

Modi’s  meetings with CEOs and expatriate Indians as well as his participation in the UN sustainable development summit are the highlights of the nearly weeklong visit.

Modi will attend a roundtable meeting on the financial sector, an important meeting with foreign institutional investors keen to invest in India. He will have another roundtable on media and communications organized  News Corp Chairman Rupert Murdoch.

He will then fly to the West Coast for his visit two-day visit to California beginning September 26. Modi is scheduled to meet with Fortune 500 company CEOs in Silicon Valley.

“A packed schedule awaits in the Big Apple. PM arrives in New York on the first part of his US visit,” according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup.

Modi was received at the airport by Ambassador Arun K Singh, Chief Representatve to the UN Asoke K Mukerji, Consul General Dnyaneshwar Mulay and others.

Singh and Mukerji  also addressed the news media meeting, aside from Swaroop, held at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel.

Modi arrived yesterday evening at the iconic hotel here to a grand reception by his supporters.

He will be back in New York on September 28 for a bilateral meeting with President Obama as well as to attend a high-level peacekeeping summit at the United Nations.

He  is scheduled to  address, September 25, global heads of state at the Sustainable Development Summit organized by Ban Ki-moon, the UN chief, when the new and ambitious post-2015 development agenda will be adopted. On Saturday, India will host the G-4 (comprising India, Japan, Germany and Brazil) summit, before Modi leaves for the West Coast for a two-day trip when he will have meetings with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google‘s new CEO Sundar Pichai. He will also attend a grand community reception in San Jose.

During his stay in the city, Modi will have meetings with President Francois Hollande of France and leaders of Bhutan, Sweden, Guyana and Cyprus, as well as those from Brazil, Japan and Germany (as part of the G- 4 meeting).

Modi will focus on giving a further push to early and urgent reform of the Security Council and to send a strong message against terrorism.

On the California visit, Ambassador Singh said, “One of the important interests in Tesla is in battery technology because it has implications on in terms of storage and renewable energy.”

Satya Nadella of Microsoft, Sunder Pichai of Google, John Chambers of Cisco Systems, executive chairman of Qualcomm Paul Jacobs and Santanu Narayan of Adobe will make presentations on digital technology, an aspect on which India is focusing much in recent months.

The focus of their presentations is expected to be what digital economy means for India, what the opportunities for India-US collaboration are and what plans they have for India.

Thereafter, Modi is expected to discuss his vision for policy on ‘Digital India’.

“Visiting Silicon Valley a number of times, I got a clear sense that the role and participation of Indian origin tech entrepreneurs in that area is extremely significant in terms of main stream cutting edge technology and the efforts going on there,” Singh said.

More than 15 per cent of startups in Silicon Valley are currently attributed to Indian origin tech entrepreneurs.

He added, “This is an additional dimension to the potential of co-operation between India and the United States.”

Mukerji said they will focus on building on the recent UN General Assembly endorsement of a negotiating text on Security Council reform and decide on the way to go forward. The negotiations are scheduled to start in the first half of November. The General Assembly overcame the first major hurdle earlier this month by endorsing the document on which to base the discussions.
