Angelina Jolie, known for her roles in films like Maleficent and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, recently opened up about her most cherished role—being a mother. In an interview with Good Morning America, Jolie, 49, shared how motherhood is the greatest joy of her life, far surpassing her career in the entertainment industry. When asked if there was anything in her life that compares to the passion Maria Callas had for singing, she responded, “Motherhood. It’s my happiness. You can take everything else away from me. Nothing else matters.”
Jolie has six children with her ex-husband Brad Pitt: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne. While the world has watched her children grow up in the spotlight, Jolie emphasized their desire for privacy. “None of them want to be in front of the camera,” she said, referring to her children’s reluctance to participate in the public eye after their early exposure due to their famous parents’ high-profile relationship.
Jolie also noted how her children, particularly her daughter Shiloh, are “quite private.” She explained that Shiloh is “extremely private,” adding that the children “weren’t born with privacy,” a reference to the intense media attention they received from a young age. “So I hope they can have that as they get older,” Jolie said, underscoring her hopes for her children to lead a more private life in the future.
Despite their preference for privacy, Jolie has allowed glimpses into her family life on rare occasions. Recently, her children have started to show interest in the entertainment industry, albeit in quieter, behind-the-scenes roles. Her two eldest sons, Maddox and Pax, worked with Jolie behind the scenes on her latest film Maria, where she portrays legendary opera singer Maria Callas. Jolie called the experience of working with them “amazing.” Furthermore, she collaborated with her youngest daughter, Vivienne, on the Broadway show The Outsiders. While these experiences allow her children to engage in the creative world, they do so away from the intense glare of the public eye.
Jolie’s youngest son, Knox, recently made his first public red carpet appearance in three years at the 2024 Governors Awards, where he accompanied his mother as her plus-one. Despite the long absence from public events, Knox appeared relaxed as he walked the carpet arm-in-arm with Jolie, suggesting that while the children may shy away from the spotlight, they are comfortable in certain settings, especially when with their mother.
