New Delhi (TIP)- The Indian Embassy on Friday raised deep concern over reports of theft of a crown gifted by Prime Minister Modi to Bangladesh’s Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple in 2021, and urged government of Bangladesh to conduct an investigation into the matter.
In a post on X, the Indian embassy stated, “We express deep concern & urge Govt of Bangladesh to investigate theft, recover the crown & take action against the perpetrators.”
Goddess kali’s crown was stolen on Thursday afternoon between 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm, Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star reported.
According to The Daily Star, the crown was stolen soon after temple priest Dilip Mukharjee left after the day’s worship and a cleaning staff discovered the crown missing from the idol’s head.
The crown holds deep cultural and religious importance, being part of a temple revered as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in Hindu mythology.
During his visit to Bangladesh in March 2021, PM Modi presented the silver and gold-plated crown to the goddess Kali at the Jeshoreshwari Temple as a gesture of goodwill. This visit marked a significant occasion as it coincided with the celebrations of Bangladesh’s Golden Jubilee of Independence and the birth centenary of its founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple is located in Satkhira and is historically significant, believed to have been constructed in the late 12th century. It is associated with various legends in Hindu mythology, particularly that it is one of the sites where parts of Goddess Sati are said to have fallen.
