New Delhi (TIP): Lieutenant Kiran Shekhawat died In the line of duty when the Dornier maritime surveillance aircraft she was flying crashed into sea 25 miles off Goa coast.
Lt. Shekhawat was an observer in the Dornier and one of three naval officers that were on board and is the first woman officer to die in the line of duty.
She is the first Woman Navy Officer to Die In The Line of duty and was cremated with full honours.
Lt. Shekhawat comes from a family that is dedicated to serving our nation. Hailing from a family of service personnel, her father retired from the Navy as Master Chief Petty Officer and her brother is a sailor with the Navy. Her husband is also a naval officer and an instructor in the Naval Academy in Ezhimala in Kerala. She was part of the Navy Woman Officer Contingent, the first ever all woman officer contingent, which also participated in this year’s Republic Day Parade.

Commoners and politicians, cutting across party lines, paid their homage to the departed soul. Accompanied by the Navy officials, the body of the officer was brought here wrapped in a tricolour.
Besides the family members of the officer, local villagers, officials of the civil and police administration, former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, BJP‘s Rao Narbir Singh and Indian National Lok Dal party’s area MLA Zakir Hussain, were among others to offered homage to the deceased officer.
