As Americans proud of our Indian ancestry, we congratulate everyone on India‘s Independence Day celebration. Jawaharlal Nehru’s “Tryst with Destiny” speech is as valid today and it was on August 14, 1947 looking towards “the midnight hour.” India today is strong and confident, led by a Sikh Prime Minister, the noble Sushil Kumar Shinde, and a Moslem Foreign Minister. India’s promise is being honored in the main, even as it deals with the natural warts of the human dynamic and representative form of government.
While imperfect, there is none better short of God. In the United States we have Ami Bera and Tulsi Gabbard in Congress to harness the separated powers for all Americans, including, Indian-Americans, who have to-date been well represented by the likes of Gary Ackerman, Eliot Engel, Carolyn Maloney, Greg Meeks, Grace Meng and the King of Queens, Joe Crowley. Our future is tied to America’s, as it should, but it may well be that America’s is tied to India in a “special relationship.” Happy Independence Day, India!
