Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra
Ambassador of India to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras

As we celebrate the 77th Independence Day of India, it is an honor to reflect on the enduring relationship between India and the Central American countries, especially Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Our nations share a bond that transcends geographical boundaries, rooted in shared values, mutual respect, and a commitment to progress.

India’s journey to independence is a testament to the indomitable spirit of our people, who courageously fought for freedom and self-determination. Today, as we commemorate this historic milestone, we also celebrate the remarkable strides India has taken in various fields, from technology and innovation to culture and diplomacy.
In our relations with Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, our partnership has flourished over the years. It is heartening to witness the collaborative efforts that have been instrumental in strengthening ties between our nations. From cultural exchanges and educational initiatives to trade and development cooperation, our engagement continues to deepen and diversify.

The Embassy’s proactive engagement has extended to partnerships that foster education, capacity-building, and sustainable development. In addition to several Yoga events in Honduras and El Salvador, the Embassy has successfully organized the largest International Day of Yoga events in 2022 and 2023 in Guatemala City. These gatherings not only promote physical well-being but also symbolize the unity of our communities. Furthermore, our commercial endeavors, such as Buyer Sellers Meets and Business to Business Meets, have paved the way for enhanced economic cooperation, fostering trade and innovation. The increasing presence of Indian companies in Central America has brought about significant economic benefits, generating job opportunities and fostering growth in the region.

Cultural diplomacy remains a cornerstone of our relations, epitomized by the vibrant Namaste India events. These cultural exchanges celebrate the rich tapestry of our traditions, arts, and heritage, strengthening the people-to-people ties that form the bedrock of our friendships. Gastronomy classes have facilitated a delightful exchange of culinary arts, enhancing cultural understanding.

Our diplomatic engagements have been marked by numerous collaborative initiatives aimed at fostering mutual growth and understanding. The Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program has been instrumental in promoting capacity-building, with scholars from Central America benefitting from a diverse range of courses in India. This exchange of knowledge further strengthens our bonds and contributes to the holistic development of our partner nations.

Moreover, we are thrilled to share that our commitment to enhancing diplomatic skills has taken a significant stride forward. The recent addition of specialized courses for diplomats in India has met with great enthusiasm. Notably, 36 diplomats from El Salvador recently attended the 1st Special Course for Diplomats by Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS) in New Delhi, a testament to our shared dedication to advancing diplomatic prowess and international relations.

Our diplomatic engagements have reached new heights, solidified by bilateral high-level Ministerial visits and successful Foreign Office Consultations that have enriched our mutual understanding and cooperation. These visits have not only reinforced the warmth of our relations but have also paved the way for meaningful partnerships in diverse sectors. India has played a significant role in the global fight against COVID-19 by providing vaccines to various countries, including those in Central America. Through its vaccine diplomacy initiative, India has been a reliable partner in delivering COVID-19 vaccines to countries in need, including Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. India has consistently demonstrated unwavering support during times of crisis in Central America. Whether it was the devastating earthquake of 2012, the prolong draught in 2014, or the volcanic eruption in 2018, India has stood strong in providing assistance and solidarity to the people of Guatemala. Our commitment to friendship and cooperation goes beyond borders, and in times of calamity, we have extended a helping hand to alleviate suffering and contribute to the recovery and rebuilding efforts.

The connection between Hindu culture and the Mayan civilization of Central America shows intriguing parallels. Shared symbolism, intricate iconography, cosmic beliefs, and ritual practices point to common spiritual themes. Though direct historical links remain uncertain, these similarities underscore the universal human pursuit of understanding existence and the cosmos. Such resemblances might have been facilitated by ancient trade networks or independent contemplations of similar concepts. The intersection of Hindu and Mayan cultural elements offers a glimpse into the shared quest for meaning across diverse civilizations.

The legacy of these endeavors underscores India’s presence and contributions in Central America. As we commemorate this milestone, let us renew our commitment to building a brighter future together. The collective efforts of India, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador are testament to the enduring spirit of cooperation that defines our relationships.

As we navigate the challenges of a rapidly changing world, the spirit of friendship and cooperation remains unwavering. India is united with Central American countries by a shared vision of a better future, characterized by prosperity, inclusivity, and sustainable development.

On this auspicious occasion, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the people of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras for their warmth and friendship. May this Independence Day inspire us to strive for greater heights, as we continue to work hand in hand for the progress and well-being of our nations.
