Barefoot College International Guatemala, Aldea Batzul, Chajul organized 2nd Graduation Ceremony of Solar Engineers

Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra reiterated India's commitment to supporting Guatemala in harnessing its solar energy resources.

GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): Barefoot College International Guatemala, Aldea Batzul, Chajul organized its 2nd Graduation Ceremony of Solar Engineers on November 23, 2023. The event marked a significant achievement as 12 women from the Ixil area successfully graduated as Solar Engineers at the Barefoot College International Center. The 10-week program, equipped these women, aged between 20 and 50, with the necessary skills to become proficient Solar Engineers. Barefoot College, with rural development projects spanning 93 countries globally, has been a torchbearer in empowering communities through sustainable practices.

These newly trained Solar Engineers are now prepared to install 350 solar systems in six communities in Quiché, Guatemala. Scheduled to commence in February 2024, these installations will bring light for the first time to approximately 2,000 people in rural Quiché, showcasing India‘s commitment to the solar energy sector and its ongoing support to Guatemala’s sustainable development initiatives.

Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra in his speech reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Guatemala in harnessing its solar energy resources. Strengthening bilateral collaboration in the solar sector will contribute to sustainable development and cleaner, greener energy for both nations. He also shared India’s visionary views on meeting 50% of India’s energy requirement from renewables by 2030, reducing projected carbon emissions by 1 Bn Tonnes. He highlighted India’s global achievements, championing awareness and adoption of solar energy.

The event was also attended by Mr. Arcadio Galindo, Director Chajulense Association, Mr. Rodrigo Paris, Director of Barefoot College International and Ms. Marta Brito Raymundo, Field Technician for Gender and Nutrition, World Food Programme who appreciated India’s commitment in solar energy. All the dignitaries expressed their appreciation for India’s unwavering commitment to solar energy initiatives. Mr. Arcadio Galindo, recognizing the significance of sustainable practices, commended India’s dedication to empowering communities through renewable energy sources. He highlighted the positive impact this endeavor will have on the lives of those in rural Guatemala. Mr. Rodrigo Paris, the Director of Barefoot College International, reiterated the shared commitment of India and Guatemala in fostering sustainable development through collaborative efforts. He emphasized the transformative role of solar energy in uplifting communities, aligning with broader global goals of environmental responsibility. Mr. Paris assured that Barefoot College will continue to play a pivotal role in this initiative by imparting training to more women. His commitment reflects the collective vision of empowering communities and promoting sustainable practices in the pursuit of a greener and more equitable future.

India consistently provides such training through its ITEC programs to foreign nationals. This initiative seamlessly aligns with India’s commitment to producing the most cost-effective solar power globally. The Solar project is poised to significantly enhance Guatemala’s solar power capabilities, marking a pivotal step toward bolstering its renewable energy infrastructure. Through grassroots participation, as these women become solar engineers, Guatemala is not only building its workforce but also investing in solar energy to diminish its reliance on non-renewable sources. This contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy landscape.
