GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): Embassy of India organized a business meet with Municipalities and other stakeholders in Guatemala to explore possibilities to invest in infrastructure sector in the region on 19 April 2024. Approximately 70 guests from different municipalities in Guatemala attended the event. During the year 2023, the Embassy was actively involved in promoting India’s investment and influence in the Central American region through various infrastructural initiatives and strategic endeavors. As a result of these concerted efforts, significant milestones have been achieved, expanding our reach beyond the local municipalities in Guatemala. In collaboration with Lakshmi Capital, a prominent Indian company, the Embassy has initiated transformative projects aimed at advancing infrastructure development in El Salvador. This includes signing two MoUs with the Ministry of Public Works, Transport, Housing, and Urban Development of the Government of El Salvador, with investments totaling US$2 billion for a metro line project and US$475 million for the procurement of 5000 buses. Similarly, Lakshmi Capital has made significant strides by signing Letters of Intent (LoIs) for five impactful projects with the Municipality of Xela in Guatemala, totaling an investment of US$1.2 billion. These projects encompass a hydroelectric system, cable car system, supply of 700 buses, a waste management plant, and a 75MW solar energy plant in the region. Additionally, an LoI has been signed for the ambitious Guatemalan Interoceanic Corridor (GIC) project, a Dry Corridor Project requiring a US$10 billion investment between Lakshmi Capital and Grupo Odepal, S.A. This project aims to establish a cutting-edge Multimodal Transport System spanning a 372-kilometer-long and 140-meter-wide strip of land, linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Moreover, Lakshmi Capital has also signed LoIs with the Municipality of El Progresso, Guatemala, for another two projects.
In response to the requirement to involve Indian companies in procuring technology, materials, services, and products, Lakshmi Capital has facilitated several visits by relevant authorities. A team from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) visited El Salvador to assess the technical aspects of the metro project. Additionally, a high-level government delegation from El Salvador led by Mr. Ibrajim Bukele, Advisor to Hon’ble President of El Salvador visited India from April 14th to April 22nd, 2024, to oversee the operation of these projects. In March 2024, a delegation led by the Mayors of Xela and El Progresso visited India to gain firsthand experience of similar projects. These infrastructural projects, coupled with the successful visits by delegations to India, exemplify India’s dedication to fostering economic development and improving infrastructure in Central America. The visible impact and successful implementation of these initiatives have drawn significant attention and admiration from municipalities throughout Guatemala. They perceive India as a valuable partner with expertise in infrastructure development, technology transfer, and capacity building, capable of helping them address their developmental challenges and achieve long-term goals. In response to this growing interest from municipalities and other stakeholders, the Embassy organized a business meet where Mayors and representatives from these regions could interact with Indian counterparts, exchange ideas, and explore potential areas of collaboration. This event provided a valuable opportunity to advance India’s interests in the region and served as a platform for meaningful discussions, fostering collaboration and partnership between Indian businesses and local governments in Guatemala.
