NEW YORK CITY (TIP): The Indian Consulate in New York hosted a reception with U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) and the Indian-American Community, September3 night. The event, held in conjunction with the American Jewish Committee (AJC), featured a meet and greet with Meng as well as a speech by the Congresswoman that highlighted the importance of U.S.-India relations and her advocacy on behalf of the Indian-American community.

The event also included speeches about Meng’s work on India by Consul General in New York Dnyaneshwar Mulay, and several Indian- American leaders which included Ravi and Ranju Batra, Ashook Ramsaran, Sudha Acharya, Naidoo Veerapan and Mridul Pathak, among others. In addition, the Global Organization of Persons of Indian Origin (GOPIO) honored Meng by awarding her with a special plaque and several other tokens of appreciation. “I thank Consul General Mulay and members of the Indian-American community for their kind words, and all their support and friendship,” said Meng.

“I look forward to continuing to work with them to further strengthen U.S.-India relations and improve the lives of all Indian-Americans.” The reception was organized by AJC as part of its effort to build stronger ties between the Jewish Indian-American communities. Meng, who was sworn into Congress in January 2013, is serving her first term in the U.S. House of Representatives representing the New York City borough of Queens.

She serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and is a member of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans. She also plans on meeting with India’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his upcoming visit to New York, and is set to attend his address at Madison Square Garden on September 28th.
