India’s Ambassador to Guatemala Interacts with Students and Faculty of San Carlos University

Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra had an engaging interactive session with students and faculty of San Carlos University

GUATEMALA CITY (TIP): The Embassy of India in Guatemala has been consistently working towards promoting Indian trade, commerce, and cultural ties in Guatemala and the broader Central American region. In recent years, the Embassy has organized numerous Business-to-Business (B2B) meetings, Business Meets, and Buyer-Seller Meets (BSMs) with various stakeholders across Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. These initiatives have not only facilitated stronger trade partnerships but also showcased India’s dynamic economic potential. With India’s growing presence on the world stage and rising popularity in Central America, especially due to the successful organization of large-scale cultural events like Diwali, Holi, Indian Film Festivals and the International Day of Yoga, educational institutions, including schools and universities, have expressed keen interest in learning more about India. Recognizing this curiosity and the geographical distance between the two countries, the Embassy decided to initiate interactive sessions aimed at young minds. In this context, a special workshop was organized at San Carlos University on 18 March 2025, which saw the participation of around 100 attendees, including 85 enthusiastic students and faculty members.

During the interactive session, Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra spoke in detail about India’s remarkable development journey, highlighting how India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and is on track to become the third-largest economy globally in the coming years. He elaborated on India’s robust economic policies, large skilled workforce, and the technological innovation driving the nation forward. Ambassador touched upon India’s significant trade relations with Guatemala, with particular emphasis on sectors like pharmaceuticals, the BPO industry, textiles, and automobiles. He shared insights into how Indian pharmaceutical companies are leading the way, positioning India as the “pharmacy of the world,” with exports reaching over 200 countries and ensuring affordable healthcare solutions globally.

Continuing his address, Ambassador further highlighted India’s growing investments in large infrastructure projects, including constructions of metro lines, supply of buses, solar power stations, cable cars, renewable energy, 5G technology, early warning system and smart city initiatives in the Central American region, which have not only transformed India domestically but also opened avenues for international collaboration. In the context of Central America, he pointed out India’s increasing role as a reliable trade partner and contributor to development projects. Ambassador Dr. Mohapatra emphasized the importance of leveraging the India-Guatemala relationship, pointing out that Indian products and services, known for their quality and affordability, could greatly benefit the Guatemalan market. He also mentioned India’s successful digital revolution and how it could serve as a model for innovation and technology transfer for countries like Guatemala.

4. The faculty members of San Carlos University expressed their appreciation for the Embassy’s initiative in organizing such an informative and interactive workshop. In their remarks, they highlighted that such engagements play a pivotal role in shaping the worldview of young students and broadening their understanding of emerging economies like India. They noted that Guatemala’s youth are increasingly looking towards global opportunities and that learning about India’s growth story, technological advancement, and vibrant culture offers them inspiration and potential avenues for collaboration, both academically and professionally.

5. During the interactive session, students posed several thoughtful and insightful questions to Ambassador Mohapatra. They showed keen interest in understanding the factors behind India’s rapid economic rise, the government’s policies on youth empowerment and skill development, and how India has balanced its ancient traditions with modern technological progress. Many students also inquired about India’s cultural diversity, the popularity of Bollywood, yoga, and Indian cuisine. Questions were raised about how Guatemala could benefit from stronger ties with India, with students eager to explore opportunities in education, cultural exchange, and trade partnerships. Some also expressed interest in future collaborations for scholarships, internships, and participation in India-based programs like ITEC and ICCR.

6. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks from the university administration, expressing gratitude to the Embassy of India for providing students with a deeper understanding of India’s global role and its potential as a strong partner for Guatemala. The Embassy reiterated its commitment to continuing such interactions and building closer ties between the youth of both countries. The event successfully opened new avenues of dialogue, leaving students and faculty inspired by India’s story of growth, resilience, and global outreach.
