HIKO Energy fined $1.25M for lying to customers about savings

NEW YORK (TIP): A New York energy-service company has been zapped for $1.25 million after a state investigation found it made false promises to customers in order to fleece them.

HIKO Energy has agreed to pay restitution to more than 25,000 current and former New York customers it ripped off.

“Thousands of New Yorkers were lured by HIKO’s false promises for huge savings, only to be stuck with more expensive energy bills,” said state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said on Monday, July 6.

An investigation by the Attorney General’s Customer Protection Bureau found HIKO marketers made bogus boasts of cheaper energy bills and even enrolled customers without their knowledge or consent.

The probe found that between June 2011 and October 2014, the Rockland County company’s customers were promised savings of up to 15% on energy costs — only to be billed much higher rates than those offered by their local utility companies.

“These kinds of consumer frauds will not be tolerated,” Schneiderman said.

Customers who believe they were victims of the fraud can submit claims online at go.bbb.org/ny-hiko or call (212) 358-2857. Claims must be submitted by Aug. 15.
