Washington (TIP): Rahul Gupta, The George Washington University grad student convicted of murdering his friend after allegedly finding him cheating with his girlfriend was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday.
25-year-old Gupta spoke in court in Montgomery County at his sentencing hearing, but he never explained what led him to murder his friend. Rahul changed his narrative several times in court, but he did acknowledge that he killed his friend Mark Waugh, 24.
On October 13, 2013, Gupta, his girlfriend and Waugh went to the Indian-American’s high-rise apartment in Silver Spring, a suburb of Washington DC, where he caught Waugh cheating with his girlfriend.
Gupta was found guilty of stabbing his Mark Waugh to death after he said he found his girlfriend and Waugh together in his Silver Spring apartment.
Waugh died after being stabbed and slashed 11 times inside the apartment.
Mark Waugh’s father, William Waugh, spoke at the sentencing. “Mark was a gift from God and his death is a tragedy we have to carry for the rest of our lives, ” William Waugh said.
Witnesses say Gupta has a problem with rage. They say he was jealous, abusive and controlling. Gupta and Waugh knew each other from high school. Waugh was a first-year law student at Georgetown University at the time his best friend killed him.
According to the arrest report, Gupta told police: “My girl and my buddy were cheating, my girl was cheating with my buddy. I walked in on them cheating and I killed my buddy.”
