MTA Public Workshop on February 26th to consider expanded bus service

State Senator Tony Avella wants expanded bus service for his constituents in Queens

NEW YORK (TIP): State Senator Tony Avella announced, February 12 that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will conduct a public workshop to discuss how the agency can improve public transportation in northeast Queens.

The meeting is part of a district-wide study set forth last year when Senator Avella allocated $500,000 from the State Executive Budget to allow the MTA to look into expanding bus service in the area.

The February 26thpublic workshop will give residents the opportunity to interact directly with MTA officials and voice their concerns with current transportation throughout northeast Queens as well as suggest ways that it can be improved.

“When the MTA’s budget crisis led to significant service reductions across the city five years ago, my district was one of the hardest-hit areas affected by the cuts. Northeast Queens is severely ignored and underserved by the city’s public transportation system and major improvements are needed in order to meet the needs of my constituents. I applaud the MTA for not only moving forward with this study, but for giving residents the chance to directly communicate their grievances with the MTA to high-level officials,” said Senator Avella.

The focus of the bus study includes every neighborhood in Senator Avella’s district, which includes Flushing, Whitestone, Bay Terrace, Bayside, Bayside Hills, College Point, Oakland Gardens, Douglaston, Glen Oaks, Fresh Meadows, Little Neck, Mitchell-Linden, Bowne Park, Beechurst, Bellerose, Fort Totten, Malba, Robinwood, Auburndale, Floral Park, Hollis Hills, Queens Village, Jamaica, Jamaica Estates and New Hyde Park.

The public workshop will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, February 26th, in the lobby of the Student Union at Queensborough Community College, 222-05 56th Avenue, Bayside.
