The miracles and virtues of coconut oil in diet and skincare have been extolled extensively. But the coconut itself can be a fabulous source of nourishment for the skin. Here are three ways you can use this wonder ingredient to make DIY face masks.
Exfoliating mask
Take the soft inner pulp of a single tomato along with the seeds, and blend it in a mixer with two tablespoons milk. To this, add half a cup of grated coconut. Mix well with a spatula and then apply all over face and neck, exfoliating in gentle upward motions for about five minutes. Leave on for another ten minutes, then wash and pat dry. Grated coconut is the gentlest exfoliant possible, since the flakes are soft, and so it is ideal for sensitive skins. The tomato and milk moisturise without being too greasy.
Nourishing mask
The pulp of the tender coconut contains nourishing benefits, and is a natural source of SPF (approximately SPF 4) against the harsh UV rays of the sun, which is why generations of local fishermen have been using them. Blend the flesh of the tender coconut till it achieves a smooth creamy consistency, and then add a few drops of almond or wheat germ essential oil. Apply and massage gently over face and neck, leave on for 10 minutes, then wipe off with a washcloth.
Toning mask
Coconut water and coconut milk are the ultimate toners when applied onto the skin – and without shelling out big bucks too! Mix half a cup of coconut water or milk with a teaspoon of cucumber or pineapple juice, and 2 or 3 drops of aloe juice. Take a small ball of cotton wool, dip it in this mixture and gently run all over face and neck. Leave on for ten minutes, and then wash off with cold water.
