Being a new mother is not only about a whole lot of joy and responsibilities, but also a few injuries that you have to handle. From carrying your baby on one hip to being the target of a tossed toy, there are a few things that can cause you serious harm. Here’s how to keep yourself safe:
Wrist
De Quervain’s syndrome or the mother’s wrist is a common complaint among new mothers. It’s caused by lifting your little one frequently, which leads to the soaring of the tendons in your thumb and wrist. To prevent this, hold your baby in a way that you keep your hand and wrist in the same line, that is least bending your wrist to hold their head.
Hip
Carrying your child on one hip and tilting your pelvis is how most mothers usually hold their children. What you should be doing instead is carrying the baby with your arms, with your body weight distributed equally on both legs.
Neck
Ever felt a twinging pain while breastfeeding your little one? That’s because of the hunched position you sit in, which strains your neck and shoulder muscles. To prevent it, make sure to roll back your neck at regular intervals, and support it with a soft pillow while at the same time raising your child slightly higher.
Eyes
Be it a tossed playing object or the children’s love for poking the eyes. Any hit to the cornea can cause a grievous injury. Make sure to keep your baby’s nails clipped short at all times. Also only buy them toys with soft edges, no metal involved.
Back
Months of carrying the little one inside you can give you a lower back ache. Add to it all the bending and lifting later to either pick the baby up or their toys, and you know what you are in for. While a good rest is the ultimate fix for back aches, you must also remember to bend your knees, instead of your torso, to lift the baby. A cold or hot pack can also help.
